The Alaska SeaLife Center was designed for research, rehabilitation, and public education. This cold-water marine research facility is dedicated to understanding the effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill and maintaining the integrity of marine ecosystems. Designed for the study of northern marine mammals, birds, fish, and crustaceans, with ±46,000 SF devoted to wet and dry research labs, includes marine veterinary health and support systems. The labs and offices were designed for resident and visiting researchers, and support adaptability for ever-changing research needs. An extensive life support system provides 4,500 gpm of fresh seawater and 500 gpm spring fed freshwater to research and habitat areas. Over 15,500 SF of outdoor deck and pools support year-round research projects. The research areas allow public viewing where possible. Public exhibits include naturalistic habitats, six aquaria, and numerous exhibit galleries.
