Turnagain Elementary School Renewal

Turnagain Elementary School Renewal

Summary

Nvision provided planning, design, and construction administration services for the major renewal of this elementary school originally built in the 1950s. The project involved renovations and upgrades to 54,870 SF of existing space and 1,600 SF of additions for a new administration suite at the new front entry and expanded resource room. The scope of work involved an extensive condition survey and facility analysis to determine structural, environmental, and programmatic adequacy, as well as design resolutions of all deficiencies. The project included extensive structural, mechanical, electrical, and environmental (exterior thermal envelope) upgrades throughout the entire school. Educational program deficiencies required a minor reconfiguration of classrooms and a major reconfiguration of administrative functions. The pedestrian and vehicular circulation systems were redesigned to provide greater separation of the two, thereby promoting a safer overall circulation pattern. Other renovations included: improved site access and safety; a redesigned administration area relocated from the interior of the school to the front to improve community interaction, visibility, and supervision; reconfigured classrooms and student support spaces to allow more room for learning; upgraded thermal envelope with added insulation that more than doubled the R-value of the exterior walls; and a new main entrance that is welcoming and suitable for an elementary school environment.
