Summary

Nvision provided design and construction administration services for the new Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in South Anchorage. This was the first Byzantine Cathedral designed and built in the arctic, and in order to achieve historic accuracy, Nvision teamed with EKONA, a nationally known Byzantine Cathedral design specialist. Unique to Alaska is the 20’ gold-domed structure that was designed to withstand the harsh northern climate. The project included the cathedral, an arcade “platea” (open courtyard), outdoor amphitheater, large multi-purpose cultural center, and banquet hall. A design challenge was to retain compatibility with the existing Victorian mansion adjacent to the new cathedral site.
